Vocatives in Greek music

Θάλαττα! Θάλαττα!

Today in class we talked about noun cases in Greek, including the vocative of the word θάλασσα, which is how you address the sea when you yell at it. Below is a nice rendition of a traditional island song that involves yelling at the sea.

Θάλασσα Λεβεντοπνίχτρα, θάλασσα φαρμακερή, συ που κάνεις το νησί μας πάντα μαύρα να φορεί.

Δεν εχόρτασες ακόμα, θάλασσα, τόσο καιρό από τα κορμιά που τρώει τ’ αλμυρό σου το νερό; Θάλασσα τ’ αλμυρό σου το νερό.

After this, there is a smooth transition into a Cretan song: μεσοπέλαγα αρμενίζω, which also involves yelling at the sea:

Θάλασσα, μη με διώχνεις μακριά…
